Al-Masjid al-Haram (Arabic: المسجد الحرام) is the large mosque in Mecca that surrounds the area where the Kaaba is located. This expression, which means a respectful Masjid, is found in 16 verses of the Qur'an.[1]
The Kaaba has undergone many changes after the Prophet Abraham and the Prophet Ismail. It was partially or completely rebuilt in various periods and reached its present form. At present, the Kaaba, together with the Masjid al-Haram, covers a total area of 400,800 m².[2]
It is also the largest mosque in existence with a capacity of 820,000 people.
